Cubasolar is the Cuban Society for the promotion respect for the environment and of renewable sources of energy. Created in 1984, this non-governmental organization has 616 active members and provincial delegations.
Cubasolar's projects, based on the sustainable use of renewable sources of energy, entail finding solutions to local problems with the help of experts in the field. Many of the projects, such as the electrification of rural communities, the fight against desertification in the San Antonio del Sur Valley, the rehabilitation of Camilo Cienfuegos City School, the rehabilitation of the River Sagua Basin and the establishment of medical clinics and schools, have had a great impact throughout the country. These projects have greatly contributed to the conservation of forests and ecosystems, the recovery of saline soils and desert areas, the management of protected areas, the preservation of atmospheric resources, the enhancement of rural health and education systems, and the improvement of human settlements.
Cubasolar also supports research and development projects, trains professionals and technicians and disseminates scientific and technical information. It also helps raise awareness of energy use and environmental ethics, through the mass media and the production of publications such as its "Energia y Tu" magazine.
