In 1955 Dr. Stutzin, a lawyer, founded the Union of Friends and Animals and in 1967 the National Committee for the Defense of Fauna and Flora (CODEFF). He is a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission and a member of the IUCN Environmental Law and Policy Commission.
Dr. Stutzin has written extensively on nature conservation and animal protection. He campaigned successfully on Chile's ratification of CITES and was instrumental in lobbying Chile to put an end to whaling. In 1976, Mr. Stutzin initiated the successful campaign to preserve Lake Chungara, the highest lake in the world.
