About the Global 500
In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
launched the Global 500 Roll of Honour for Environmental Achievement.
The award is a tribute to successes on the front lines of global
environmental action. It is granted to individuals and organizations
for outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement
of the environment.
The Global 500 programme is now well established and is in
its second phase. It provides prestige and attracts worldwide
public, media and political support. This attention and publicity
has been well received and provides the impetus to spur others
to action.

About the Global 500 Environmental Forum
The United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Global 500
Laureate Roll of Honour to recognize the environmental achievements
of individuals and organizations around the world. Since 1987,
over 600 Laureates have received the prestigious Global 500
Laureate award.
Many Laureates devote impressive portions of their lives to
such global concerns as climate change, deforestation, ocean
pollution, dumping of toxic waste, and the conservation of biodiversity.
The formation of the Global 500 Environmental Forum
at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro made it possible
for Laureates to support and communicate with each other. The
Forum includes individuals from all walks of life... individuals
working alone or in organizations... individuals whose initiative
and courage protect the environment against all odds. Its network
is particularly helpful to those Laureates who live and work
in isolated areas.
