Julia Hailes, MBE
Julia Hailes is a leading environmental opinion-former, freelance
environmental consultant and speaker. Her work includes environmental
auditing, management briefings and advising companies on environmental
policy, strategy and communications. Clients with whom she has
worked include British Airways, British Airways Holidays, Dow
Europe, ICI Polyurethanes, Neste, Novo Nordisk, Procter & Gamble
and Tioxide.
Julia Hailes is co-author of a number of books, including the
international No.1 best-selling Green Consumer Guide
published in 1988 and selling over one million copies. Other
books include Green Pages: The Business of Saving the World
(1987), The Green Consumer's Supermarket Shopping Guide
(1989), The Young Green Consumer Guide (1990), The
Green Business Guide (1991) and Holidays That Don't Cost
the Earth (1992). She has also contributed to a number of
key reports including The LCA Sourcebook (1993) and Who
Needs It? (1995).
Her latest book written alongside John Elkington was published
in July 1998 by Hodder & Stoughton. MANUAL 2000, Life Choices
for the Future You Want is a fact-fact filled guide on how
we can all help build a safer, saner world. She is now working
on The GM Food Guide which will be published this summer
by Victor Gollancz.
In 1987 Julia Hailes founded SustainAbility Ltd with John Elkington,
where she was Director and Company Secretary until 1995. She
is now a SustainAbility Council Member and Senior Associate
working from her home in Somerset. SustainAbility is a leading
edge environmental consultancy with an international profile.
Julia Hailes is a non-executive director of the Out of this
World, a chain of alternative supermarkets set up as a co-operative
in 1994. Four shops have been opened to date.
In January 1996 Julia Hailes carried out an environmental review
for the Bamburi Portland Cement Company in Kenya. She was also
co-opted to the Somerset Committee for the Council for the Protection
for Rural England as their Waste Officer (1996-1998). She is
currently running for election to the District Council in her
area.
Julia Hailes has spoken at conferences world-wide including
Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, the US and all over Europe.
She has also made numerous television appearances in Britain
and abroad including presenting a weekly series of environmental
programmes on UK network television.
In 1989 Julia Hailes was elected to the UN Global 500 Roll
of Honour for her outstanding environmental achievements and
in 1992 was elected as the European representative to the Global
500 Forum Council. She is a recognised expert on eco-labelling
and has sat on the UK Eco-labelling Board since its inception,
in 1990.
Julia Hailes was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List
